SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY

The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program is a comprehensive training program that teaches people to swim and helps them be safe in, on and around the water. The program includes swimming courses for a variety of age groups and abilities. It also includes a wide range of water safety courses and presentations to help teach all age groups how to enjoy the water safely—and how to take effective action if an emergency does occur. The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program consists of

  • Parent and Child Classes
  • Preschool Aquatics Classes
  • Six levels of Learn to Swim
  • Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety
  • Several Aquatics Safety Presentations
  • Water Safety for Swim Coaches
  •

Preschool Aquatics

Preschool Aquatics courses are specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of young children about 4 and 5 years old and provide a positive aquatic learning experience. Preschool Aquatics includes three successive levels that help children build and improve basic swimming and water safety skills.

  • Level 1—Helps children feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely.
  • Level 2—Builds on the skills leaned in Level 1 and gives children opportunities to learn additional fundamental skills, such as breath control, floating and basic locomotion.
  • Level 3—Builds on the skills in Level 2 and helps children improve coordination of simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions.

Learn-to-Swim

The six levels of Learn-to-Swim are designed to give participants a positive learning experience and teach aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The Learn-to-Swim courses help swimmers of all ages and varying abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The objective is to teach participants to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.

  • Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills—Helps participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
  • Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills—Builds on the skills in Level 1 and gives participants success with fundamental skills.
  • Level 3: Stroke Development—Builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water.
  • Level 4: Stroke Improvement—Develops participants’ confidence in the strokes being learned and improves other aquatic skills.
  • Level 5: Stroke Refinement—Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.
  • Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency—Refines the strokes so participants swim them with ease, efficiency and power over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options. Each of these options focuses on preparing participants for more advanced courses, such as the Water Safety Instructor course. These options include—
    • Personal Water Safety.
    • Fundamentals of Diving.
    • Fitness Swimming.
