Wilderness and Remote First Aid

The American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid program is designed to provide individuals with a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care when immediate access to emergency medical services (EMS) personnel are more than 1 hour away. This includes wilderness and remote environments and urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.  This 16-hour course is based on Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines established by and for the Boy Scouts of America.  Topics covered include:

  • Integration of emergency action principles in a wilderness setting
    Performing primary and secondary assessments
  • Head (brain), neck and spinal injuries
  • Hypothermia
    Heat-related emergencies
  • Altitude-related illnesses
    Allergies and anaphylaxis
  • Wounds and wound infection
  • Bone and joint injuries
  • Burns and much more

 

**Participants must be a minimum of 14 years of age and posess a current Adult CPR/AED certification in order to qualify for registration for this course.  The instructor will need proof of your certification on the day of the class.**

Fire Response

The Red Cross continues to help our local residents affected by house fires.  On September 21st we responded to a fire on Jefferson Avenue and provided food, lodging and clothing for 1 adult and 3 children; Last week we assisted a family of 2 adults and 3 children and 2 seniors who lost everything.

As part of an ongoing effort to better serve the military community, the American Red Cross will move to a single telephone number for its emergency communication services. Beginning June 13, 2011, all military members and their families can use one number to send an urgent message to a service member.  877-272-7337 (U.S. Toll Free)
